NYCFC goal-scoring ace David Villa has been voted to the Major League Soccer All-Star Team, the team announced Friday. This is his third All-Star appearance in his three years in the MLS.
Villa, who helped Spain win the World Cup in 2010, was one of ten players selected to the All-Star Fan XI by online fan voting.
“Thank you to all the fans who voted!” Villa wrote on Twitter. “I’m excited to be part of this year’s #MLSAllStar!”
The 35-year-old forward has been NYCFC’s top scorer in all three seasons since coming over from Spain’s La Liga in 2014. He’s scored 53 goals in 81 games in MLS.
Behind 12 goals from the captain, NYCFC has the third most points (33) in the league and the club sits third in the Eastern Conference standings.
The MLS All-Star Team will face the reigning La Liga and UEFA Champions League title holders, Real Madrid in the MLS All-Star Game. The game will be played on Wednesday, Aug. 2 at 8:30 p.m. ET at Soldier Field in Chicago.
In last season’s All-Star Game, the MLS All-Stars lost to Arsenal, 2-1.
Joining Villa among the Fan XI are fellow World Cup champions Kaka (Orlando City) and Bastian Schweinsteiger (Chicago Fire).
Tim Howard, who carried the U.S. on his back at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, will be the starting goalie for the MLS squad.
The full squad will be announced later in July.
