Jaden Smith knows he’s weird.
The 18-year-old Twitter philosopher opened up about his penchant for the strange and how it has affected his new fashion line.
“I always knew no one was going to understand me — since before I could talk — and that’s why I was so quiet. I was very calm, very to myself,” Smith told Variety. “I could tell I felt differently than other kids’ I could by the way they treated me.”
But it’s that feeling of looking in, and being on the outside that has made “The Get Down” actor a budding fashion icon. He’s made headlines for wearing dresses and skirts — something he said he’s done for nearly 10 years.

“I’ve always been super-duper fly and super-duper different,” he said, adding his gender-bending style choices is what he believes caught everyone’s attention. “People just start caring when they have a reason to start caring.”
The “After Earth” star’s new clothing line, called MSFTSRep — pronounced misfits — is “a place for the lost kids and everyone to go, and something for them to have.”
He created the line for “the girl that wants to be a tomboy or the boy that wants to wear a skirt, and people try to condemn. We’re here for you. Tell us your stories,” Smith said. “If someone at your school’s trying to pick on you it doesn’t matter because Jaden Smith’s got your back.”
Smith has made a priority of breaking down gender barriers the past couple years — he even models women’s wear for Louis Vuitton.
He noted his parents, Will and Jada Pinkett Smith are the foundation for his inner-confidence.
“My parents told me that the world was harsh and that we had to be strong within ourselves.”
