The Giants said all along they were going to start looking for Eli Manning’s successor. Now they’ve taken their shot.
Big Blue selected California QB Davis Webb in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft.
Webb, taken with the 87th overall pick, succeeded Jared Goff after transferring from Texas Tech, where he lost his job to Patrick Mahomes. Webb received some hype leading into the draft, with some people speculating he could even sneak into the first round.
Though productive in college, like other quarterbacks coming out of the Air Raid passing systems of Texas Tech and Cal, Webb will face a transition to the pro game.
“We thought he had the best arm in the draft this year,” GM Jerry Reese said.
The GM made it clear the team hopes Manning continues to play for years to come but believe that Webb has a high ceiling when its time for the baton to be passed. Reese said the team informed Manning to let him know they were selecting a quarterback.
