Jewelry has already caused Falcons wide receiver Julio Jones a six-figure loss this offseason, but David Irving took the pain up a notch in Dallas on Tuesday.
The Cowboys defensive end suffered a ripped nipple when he lost his nipple ring during practice.
“It hurt so bad I just had to let the world know,” Irving said Wednesday after tweeting news of the injury the night before.
When asked why he got his nipple pierced in the first place, Irving said it simply helps him off the field.
“Well, damn, if we’re talking about it — that’s my spot, man,” he said. “When you get a pierce, it gets more sensitive. The girls love it. I like it.”
Irving was reportedly concerned the cut wouldn’t close up, but the 23-year-old has plenty of time to heal: the third-year lineman will begin serving a four-game suspension at the start of the season for violating the league’s performance-enhancing drugs policy.
Retired Giants offensive lineman Geoff Schwartz couldn’t help but poke fun at the unusual injury.
“File this under ‘things an OL would never have to say,’” Schwartz tweeted.
Jones, Atlanta’s star receiver, recently lost an earring valued at over $100,000 after it hit the water during a jet skiing trip near training camp in Georgia. Jones even hired a dive team to try to recover the diamond, but it was to no avail.
Irving, however, didn’t hire any search squads, but even if the ring turns up on the practice field, he may want to wait a while before restimulating that part of his body.
