Among the fashionable first ladies, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis tends to get much of the fanfare with her pearls, pill box hats, and oversized sunglasses. Michelle Obama also consistently garners raves for her high-low mixing and stylish silhouettes. And of course one can’t overlook the stylish contributions made to the White House during Nancy Reagan’s Hollywood-influenced era — which is now being celebrated anew thanks to an auction at Christie’s, in which her lavish jewelry collection is finally getting its moment in the spotlight, five months after she passed away.
Christie’s auction of the private collection of President and Mrs. Ronald Reagan, which is slated to begin on September 21 and 22 and is currently on view at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance until August 21, includes a wide assortment of personal mementos, furniture, books, and artwork in addition to Nancy’s impressive jewels.
Included in the selection of Presidential-caliber precious stones to hit the auction block this fall are the 40th First Lady’s Van Cleef & Arpels diamond and gold lion pendant/brooch necklace and matching diamond and gold lion ear clips worn on a state visit to the U.K. in 1988, worth an estimated $50,000 and $20,000 respectively.
There’s also a very patriotic ring included in the collection, featuring an American flag motif constructed out of diamonds, sapphires and rubies made by Bulgari and worn on July 4, 1986, worth an estimated $8,000.
A gold and diamond twisted bangle also from Bulgari and worn by the First Lady to State dinners is estimated to auction for between $5,000 and $7,000.
And if you thought those pieces were over the top just wait until you feast your eyes on this gold and diamond evening bag worth $15,000, mabé pearl, diamond and onyx Bulgari ring for $5,000, a pair of $1,500 Ruser diamond ear clips, and $7,000 Van Cleef & Arpels diamond and platinum ear pendants.
All in all, the auction will include 83 jewelry lots with a total high estimate of more than $280,000.
As for the rest of the auction pieces, prices for the individual items range from $1,000 to $50,000, and are expected to raise more than $2 million with all of the proceeds from these sales being donated to The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute.
